What Language Requirements Must be Met for Education in Germany?

In order to successfully enter into higher education studies in Germany, foreign applicants must demonstrate a certain level of proficiency within the German language equal to level C1 (mastery) or B2(advanced), based on The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). All courses offered by public universities require students to take classes in either their native language or German depending on which subject area they enroll in whereas private colleges often offer bilingual classes where both English and German may be used as means of communication with professors and peers alike.

  • TestDaF: This test consists of four parts (Reading Comprehension, Listening Comprehension, Written Expression, and Oral Communication) which requires applicants who have studied German for at least two years or more at an academic level institution abroad.

  • Goethe Institute Certificate: This certificate can be attained after taking three exams – Reading/Listening Comprehension, Writing, and Conversational Accuracy – over five levels ranging from A1(lowest level) - C2(highest). Each university sets its own standards when it comes to accepting these certifications; usually, anything above B2/C1 should give students plenty of options for enrollment into their desired courses.

  • DSH Exam: Designed specifically by most universities as a criterion for entry into higher education institutions within Germany itself; the exam covers all major aspects related to Language Proficiency including written expression & grammar along with reading & listening tests; and carries quite a weightage during the admissions process.
