Top Ausbildung Courses in GermanyIf you've started researching Ausbildung in Germany for Indian students, you've probably noticed that everybody seems to have an opinion about which course is “best”. One person tells you to choose nursing because Germany needs nurses. Someone else says IT has better salaries. Then you come across mechatronics, logistics, hospitality and a whole list of technical Ausbildung programmes you've probably never heard of before.

And then comes the obvious question: Which one should I choose?

Ausbildung is not simply a course you complete and move on from. You are training for a profession. In a dual Ausbildung, you learn the theory at a vocational school while gaining practical experience with an employer. So the profession you choose matters.

Germany has a very large vocational training system, with hundreds of recognised occupations. And there are opportunities. In the 2024/25 training year, the Federal Employment Agency recorded 494,000 training positions reported to employment services and 444,000 applicants. By the end of September 2025, around 54,000 training positions were still unfilled.

That sounds encouraging, and it is. But it doesn't mean that an Indian student can simply pick any course, apply once and expect an offer. A lot of aspects such as your interest, profile, career goal matter here. So let's look at the top Ausbildung courses in Germany and, more importantly, who they actually make sense for.

Ausbildung Courses in Germany at a Glance

Before we go into each profession, here's a quick comparison.

Ausbildung field Where you may work Practical component German communication Consider if you,
Nursing Ausbildung in Germany Hospitals, care facilities, outpatient services Very high High Like healthcare and working with people
IT Ausbildung in Germany IT companies, offices, technical departments Medium to high Medium to high Enjoy computers and solving technical problems

The German government's official vocational-training portal currently highlights several sectors with strong demand, including nursing, transport and logistics, electronic and metal industries, construction, hotel and gastronomy, trading and sales, foodstuffs and medical technology.

So there are considerably more options than the usual nursing-versus-IT debate.

Which Ausbildung Course Is Best for Indian Students?

This is where I would stop looking at rankings for a minute.

If you were sitting across from us in a counselling session and asked, “Which Ausbildung course should I choose?”, we wouldn't immediately give you a list.

We'd ask you a few questions first.

What subjects did you actually enjoy?

Do you like working with people?

Would you rather work with machines?

Do you enjoy computers?

Are you comfortable working in a customer-facing environment?

How strong is your German?

And perhaps the most important question:

Can you imagine yourself doing this job five years from now?

Here's a quick way to think about it:

If you are someone who... Ausbildung options worth exploring
Enjoys caring for people Nursing Ausbildung in Germany
Loves computers and technology IT Ausbildung in Germany
Likes machines and technical systems Mechatronics / Industrial Mechanics
Is genuinely interested in cars Automotive Mechatronics
Enjoys planning and organisation Logistics Ausbildung in Germany
Likes meeting customers Hospitality / Retail Ausbildung
Enjoys electronics and automation Electronics Ausbildung in Germany
Prefers practical work to classroom-heavy learning Technical, automotive, logistics or industrial fields
Wants a strongly people-focused career Nursing, hospitality or retail

Don't treat this table like a career test.

It's only a starting point. For example, you might be good at biology but still dislike nursing because you don't want to work with patients. You might be good with computers but hate sitting at a desk. You might love cars but not enjoy workshop work. That's why the actual profession matters.

Nursing Ausbildung in Germany

Let's start with Nursing Ausbildung in Germany, because this is probably the course Indian students ask us about most often. And there is a genuine reason for the interest. In 2025, the Federal Employment Agency's international placement service helped 923 people from abroad start vocational training in Germany, with more than half entering nursing professions. India was also among the main countries of origin.

The training normally takes three years and combines classroom learning with practical training in hospitals, care facilities and other healthcare settings.

But we would have one honest conversation with you before you choose nursing.

Don't choose nursing simply because “Germany needs nurses.”

You need to be comfortable caring for people, communicating with patients and taking responsibility. Shift work can also be part of the job. If you genuinely want a career in healthcare, nursing can be a very good option. If you dislike patient care and are choosing it only because you think it is the easiest route to Germany, we'd suggest looking at something else.

German is also important from the beginning. For nursing training, the required level can be B1 or B2, depending on the federal state.

Good fit: Students who genuinely want healthcare and a people-focused career.

IT Ausbildung in Germany

IT Ausbildung in Germany is another popular choice, especially among students who enjoy computers and technology. One of the best-known occupations is Fachinformatiker, with areas such as application development and system integration.

The advantage is that you're training for a specific profession while gaining practical experience.

But don't choose IT just because you've heard that IT jobs pay well in Germany. If you actually enjoy solving technical problems and figuring out how things work, that's a much better reason to consider it.

And remember, demand doesn't mean every applicant gets an offer. Competition still exists.

Good fit: Students who enjoy computers, technology, logical thinking and problem-solving.

Mechatronics Ausbildung in Germany

If you are more comfortable with machines than spreadsheets, Mechatronics Ausbildung in Germany may be a better fit.

It combines mechanics, electronics and automation, with practical work involving machinery, industrial systems and production equipment.

Germany has a large electronic and metal industry, with around 3.75 million employees in the sector in 2026, according to the government portal. But a large industry doesn't automatically make the profession right for you.

If you enjoy technical subjects and hands-on work, it's worth exploring.

Good fit: Students interested in machines, electronics, automation and practical technical work.

Automotive Ausbildung in Germany

If you have always been interested in cars, Automotive Ausbildung in Germany is another option. The Kfz-Mechatroniker pathway combines mechanical work with electronics and modern vehicle diagnostics.

But ask yourself something before applying:

Do you like cars, or do you like working on cars?

There is a difference. Watching car videos is very different from spending your working day in a workshop.

If you genuinely enjoy mechanical work and understanding how vehicles work, this can be a strong choice.

Good fit: Students interested in vehicles, mechanics, electronics and practical work.

Logistics Ausbildung in Germany

Logistics Ausbildung doesn't get as much attention as nursing or IT, but it is an important sector in Germany.

The work can involve warehouses, transportation, planning and coordinating the movement of goods. The government portal describes apprentices as being in demand in transport and logistics, with around 3.35 million people working in logistics in 2023.

There are also several different occupations within logistics, so don't stop at the phrase “Logistics Ausbildung”. Look at the actual job and understand what you would be doing.

Good fit: Students who enjoy planning, organisation, transport and processes.

Hospitality Ausbildung in Germany

If you enjoy meeting people and working in a busy environment, Hospitality Ausbildung in Germany can be worth considering.

There are vocational opportunities across hotels, restaurants and the wider hospitality sector.

But be realistic about the work. Hospitality can mean evenings, weekends and busy periods. It isn't always the glamorous hotel career students imagine.

If you genuinely enjoy customer interaction and that kind of workplace, it can be a good fit.

Good fit: Students who enjoy people, communication, customer service and fast-paced work.

Industrial Mechanic Ausbildung

Industrial Mechanic Ausbildung, or Industriemechaniker, is worth considering if you enjoy practical engineering.

The work can include machinery, production equipment, maintenance, inspection and repairs. Germany's electronic and metal industry has a wide range of vocational occupations, including industrial mechanics.

This is one of those Ausbildung options students sometimes overlook because they are focused only on nursing or IT.

If you like fixing things and working with machinery, take a closer look.

Good fit: Students interested in machinery, engineering, maintenance and practical work.

Retail Ausbildung in Germany

Retail Ausbildung in Germany may not be the first option students think about, but it can suit someone who enjoys people and communication.

The work can include customer service, sales, stock management and store operations.

The important point here is German. If you are still struggling to communicate confidently, a customer-facing profession will naturally be more difficult.

If you enjoy helping customers, working in a team and being around people, retail could be worth exploring.

Good fit: Students who enjoy communication, customer service and commercial environments.

Electronics Ausbildung in Germany

If you enjoy electronics, electrical systems and automation, an Electronics Ausbildung in Germany could be a good option.

Germany has a large technical and industrial sector, with many vocational opportunities in electronics and automation.

But don't choose it simply because Germany is known for engineering.

Read the job description. Understand the work. Then decide.

Good fit: Students interested in electronics, automation, electrical systems and practical technical work.

Which Ausbildung Courses Have Strong Demand in Germany?

This is useful information, but we don't like turning it into a “top 10 demand ranking”.

The official German government currently highlights nursing, transport and logistics, electronic and metal industries, construction, hotel and gastronomy, trading and sales, foodstuffs and medical technology among its vocational-training profiles.

Field What the current official information tells us What you should take from it
Nursing Strong international recruitment and demand Good option if you genuinely want healthcare
Transport & Logistics Apprentices are described as being in demand Worth exploring beyond the usual popular courses
Electronic & Metal Industry Large technical sector with many training occupations Good for technically inclined students
Hospitality Established vocational field with future opportunities Language and flexibility matter
Trading & Sales Very large employment and training sector Strong communication skills are important
Medical Technology Government identifies future-oriented opportunities Interesting for students who like health + technology

And here's the important part.

Demand tells you where opportunities may exist. It does not tell you which profession you should choose.

Those are two different questions.

How to Choose the Right Ausbildung in Germany

We normally suggest students work through this in a particular order.

  • Start with the profession

    1. Don't start with salary.

    2. Start with the job.

    3. What will you actually be doing from Monday to Friday?

  • Check the Ausbildung requirements

    1. Look at your education, German language level and the requirements of that particular profession.

    2. Don't assume that because one Ausbildung accepts your qualification, every Ausbildung will.

  • Look at employers

    1. This is an important difference between Ausbildung and university.

    2. In a dual Ausbildung, the company is part of your training.

    3. You aren't simply waiting for a university to give you admission.

    4. You are looking for an employer willing to train you.

  • Look at the Ausbildung salary per month

    1. Of course you need to know what you will earn.

    2. But don't compare random figures from different websites.

    3. Your training remuneration can depend on the profession, employer, region and training year. The official German government guidance explicitly points out these factors.

Factor Why it matters
Profession Different occupations have different remuneration
Employer Training conditions can vary between employers
Region Both remuneration and living costs can vary
Training year Allowance can increase during training
Collective agreement Can affect remuneration where applicable
Gross vs. net Your actual take-home amount is lower than gross

So when you see:

“This Ausbildung pays €1,400 per month.”

don't immediately assume that's what you will receive in your bank account.

Ask:

Which profession?

Which employer?

Which year?

Gross or net?

And what is the source?

That's how you avoid making decisions based on misleading salary screenshots.

Highest Paying Ausbildung Courses in Germany: Should Salary Decide?

Let's be practical. Salary matters.

If you're moving from India to Germany, you obviously need to know whether your income will cover your expenses. But I would not make highest paying Ausbildung courses in Germany your main selection criterion. Your Ausbildung allowance is part of your training period. Your profession is what you're building your career around.

Imagine choosing a profession you don't enjoy because it pays €100 or €200 more during training.

Then imagine doing that work every day for the next several years.

Suddenly the extra €200 doesn't look quite as attractive. So yes, compare the financial side.

But compare the career, not just the training allowance.

German Language Requirements for Ausbildung

This is one conversation we have with students quite often. “I'll start German after I get the offer.”

We understand why students think that way. They want to know whether they'll actually get the opportunity before investing months into language learning.

But German isn't just something you need for the visa. You are going to use it at vocational school; you'll use it with your employer; you’ll use it with colleagues. And if you work in nursing, hospitality or retail, you'll use it with patients or customers. For nursing, the official guidance says B1 or B2 may be required depending on the federal state. For other professions, the exact requirements can differ.

Our advice is simple:

Don't wait until everything else is ready before starting German. If Germany is genuinely your plan, language preparation should start early.

Can You Do Ausbildung After Class 12?

Yes, Indian students who have completed Class 12 can explore Ausbildung. But there is an important distinction here. Class 12 is not a universal requirement for every single Ausbildung profession. The exact requirements can depend on the occupation, employer and training structure.

So don't ask only:

“Is Class 12 enough for Ausbildung?”

Ask:

“Is my qualification suitable for this particular Ausbildung?”

That's the more useful question.

Your academic qualification is only one part of your profile. German language skills, motivation, practical suitability and the employer's expectations can all matter.

How to Apply for Ausbildung in Germany

Once you've decided on the profession, the process becomes easier to understand.

Step What happens
Choose your profession Understand the actual job before applying
Check requirements Review education, German and profession-specific criteria
Prepare documents CV, certificates, transcripts, language proof and other requested documents
Search for vacancies Find suitable training positions with employers
Apply Submit your application according to the employer's requirements
Attend interviews Discuss your motivation, skills and suitability
Receive the contract Selected candidates receive an Ausbildungsvertrag
Complete visa formalities Apply for the relevant visa or residence permission

And please don't make the mistake of applying to one company and waiting.

The Federal Employment Agency recommends applying to several companies and being geographically flexible when searching for training positions.

That makes practical sense.

If you restrict yourself to one employer in one city, you are making an already competitive process harder for yourself.

Ausbildung Visa for Indian Students

Once you have secured a suitable training position, you need to look at the visa side.

The exact requirements depend on your circumstances and the type of vocational training.

You need to meet the applicable requirements around your training place, language ability and financial means.

And this is another reason we don't like telling students to look only at the Ausbildung salary per month.

You also need to think about:

  • Rent

  • Health insurance

  • Food

  • Transport

  • Everyday expenses

  • Any additional financial proof required for the visa

Visa rules and financial thresholds can change, so don't rely on a three-year-old blog post when you're actually preparing your application.

Check the current official German requirements at that point.

Ausbildung vs University in Germany

This comparison comes up a lot. And there isn't a winner. It depends on what you want.

Ausbildung University Degree
Main purpose Professional training Academic education
Learning style Practical + classroom Primarily academic
Workplace training Central to dual Ausbildung Usually not the main structure
Training remuneration Usually paid in dual Ausbildung No training salary
Qualification Recognised vocational qualification Academic degree
Best for Students who want to train for a specific profession Students seeking academic specialisation
Career direction Directly connected to an occupation Depends on degree and career path

If you need a university degree for the career you want, don't choose Ausbildung simply because you like the idea of earning while learning.

And if you know you learn much better by doing, don't assume university is automatically the better option just because it sounds more academic. Choose the route that actually fits your career.

Common Mistakes Indian Students Make

After speaking to students about Ausbildung, some mistakes become very familiar. We have listed them here for you:

Choosing a profession because it is “in demand”

Demand is useful information. It isn't a career plan. Choose a profession based on your interest rather than just looking at social media hype for a particular role.

Choosing based only on salary

Your training allowance is temporary. Your profession stays with you much longer.

Starting German too late

Don't wait until your application is ready. Start your journey with preparing for the required German level.

Applying to only one employer

One rejection doesn't mean Germany has rejected you. It means that employer didn't select you just like any other job role. Apply again.

Assuming every Ausbildung has the same requirements

It doesn't. The profession, employer and training structure can all make a difference.

Believing guaranteed-placement promises

Nobody outside the employer can guarantee that an employer will select you. Be very careful with anyone promising a guaranteed Ausbildung offer.

Not researching the actual job

This is probably the biggest mistake. Read what the job involves. Understand the working environment. Find out what the daily routine looks like. Because once you move to Germany, the excitement eventually becomes normal life.

Final Thoughts: Which Ausbildung Course Is Right for You?

There are plenty of good Ausbildung courses in Germany for Indian students.

Nursing, IT, mechatronics, automotive, logistics, hospitality, industrial mechanics, retail and electronics can all lead to very different careers.

But there is no single best Ausbildung course in Germany. The best option is the one that fits your background, your strengths and the kind of work you actually want to do.

At Anigdha, this is how we approach Ausbildung counselling too. We don't want a student to choose a course because it happens to be trending this month. We want you to understand the profession first and then decide whether the pathway makes sense for you.

Because getting to Germany is one decision.

Knowing what you want to do once you get there is the more important one.

FAQs

Is Ausbildung in Germany a good option for Indian students?

It can be, especially if you want to learn a profession through practical training rather than follow a traditional university route. But the right Ausbildung depends on your qualification, German language level and the type of work you actually want to do.

Can I do Ausbildung in Germany after Class 12?

Yes. Indian students who have completed Class 12 can explore Ausbildung, but the requirements are not identical for every profession. Your qualification, German level and the employer's requirements all matter.

Which Ausbildung is best for Indian students?

There isn't one Ausbildung that is best for everyone. Nursing, IT, mechatronics, automotive, logistics and hospitality are some of the options students commonly consider. The better question is which profession suits your interests and strengths.

How much German do I need for Ausbildung?

It depends on the profession. Nursing, for example, may require B1 or B2, depending on the federal state. Other Ausbildung programmes can have different requirements. We generally advise students not to leave German preparation until the last minute.

Do I need work experience for Ausbildung in Germany?

Not necessarily. It depends on the occupation and employer. For many students, having relevant academic qualifications and the required German level is more important than having years of work experience.

Can I get Ausbildung in Germany without German?

This is not something we would recommend planning around. You will use German at vocational school and at your workplace, and some professions have specific language requirements. Start learning German before you begin applying.

Is Ausbildung better than going to university in Germany?

Neither is automatically better. Ausbildung is more focused on learning a specific profession through practical and classroom training, while university is more academically oriented. The right choice depends on the career you want.

How difficult is it to get an Ausbildung from India?

It can be competitive. You are not simply applying to a university and waiting for admission; you need to find an employer willing to train you. That's why we advise students to apply to multiple suitable vacancies rather than depend on one employer.

Can I get a guaranteed Ausbildung placement?

Be very careful with anyone making that promise. An employer ultimately decides whether to offer you a training contract. No counsellor can guarantee that an employer will select you.

What should I consider before choosing an Ausbildung?

Don't start with salary or what is trending on social media. Start with the actual job. Ask yourself whether you can see yourself doing that work every day, because the profession you choose will matter much longer than the excitement of simply getting to Germany.
